Dental Examinations

What to Expect

A dental examination is a routine check-up where a dentist assesses your oral health, identifies potential issues, and provides preventive care recommendations. It’s essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums and catching problems early.

Steps in a Dental Examination

Medical & Dental History Review:

Discussion of any medical conditions, medications, or dental concerns.

Evaluation of past dental treatments and habits (e.g., smoking, diet).

2. Visual Examination of Teeth & Gums

Checking for cavities, plaque, tartar, and tooth wear.

Assessing gum health for signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease.

Examining fillings, crowns, bridges, or implants for damage.

3. X-Rays (If Needed):

Helps detect hidden cavities, infections, bone loss, and impacted teeth.

Common types:

Bitewing X-rays (to check for decay between teeth).

Periapical X-rays (for detailed views of a single tooth & root).

Panoramic X-rays (full-mouth view for wisdom teeth & jaw issues).

Oral Cancer Screening:

Checking tongue, cheeks, gums, and throat for lumps, sores, or discoloration.

Early detection is key for successful treatment.

Bite & Jaw Joint (TMJ) Assessment:

Evaluating alignment and jaw function for signs of TMJ disorders or bruxism (teeth grinding).

Discussion & Treatment Plan:

Dentist explains findings and recommends any necessary treatments.

Personalized advice on brushing, flossing, and diet for better oral health.

How Often Should You Get a Dental Exam?
